Dining and Recreation

In an effort to reflect the true family ambience of Rivchun Jewelers, we have created a section dedicated to Joe Soukenik, Sr., president of Chas. S. Rivchun & Sons.  Joe, Sr. has developed not only a reputation as an expert in the field of jewelry over his fifty-year tenure at Rivchun Jewelers, but also, as an ambassador to fine dining and entertainment in the Greater Cleveland area and beyond! Often, clients visiting Cleveland will call Joe for advice on where to dine during their stay.

So from time to time, Joe, Sr. will share with you a morsel of his second passion! He will offer recommendations on where to dine, favorite meals, and friends you may meet along the way! So, enjoy the reviews and bon appetite!

November 2009

Good morning!  Mary Meghan here.  Being a huge foodie, I was more than happy to take Joe Sr.’s place in doing a review this season.  The Fabulous Food Show was on Cleveland’s menu for entertainment on Nov. 13th -Nov.15th at the IX Center.  Though, I was only able to attend one day, I was able to take in a huge variety of what our area has to offer in culinary creations, as well as tools to make you a fantastic home chef!

We sampled delicious cheeses from our friends the Miceli family of Miceli Dairy Products and The Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op/ Western Reserve Foods. Offerings of incredible bakery, biscotti and breads from Theresa’s Bakery of the West Side Market, MsCotti, Inc. and Orlando Baking Company covered your sweet tooth and your carb fix!  There were so many samples it really could make your head spin.  White Flower Cake Shoppe had a fantastic display of cakes in designs varying from a classically beautiful wedding cake to a huge cheese-burger with all of the fixings (yes, made out of cake!)  The talent showcased was unbelievable.

Bob Sferra of Culinary Occasions demonstrated great holiday cookies.  We learned how to create four different kinds.  Biscotti are definitely the front runner for the cookie exchange with my girlfriends this year!  Bob has a great personality and sense of humor which he acquired from his family that was seated in the second row! His company, Culinary Occasions, offers many services which include cooking classes and private and corporate events.

The moment I waited for occurred at 3:45pm when our hometown celebrity chef, Michael Symon, took the stage.  He was introduced as The Prince of Cleveland and I’m not going to argue.  He was wonderfully personal, self-deprecatingly humorous and a great representation of just what a Clevelander with drive and inspiration can accomplish.  As an added bonus, Michael’s golfing buddy and famous chef, Bobby Flay, popped out to say hello and rave about his friend and contemporary.

I’ve had the opportunity to dine at most of Michael Symon’s local restaurants, and I can only say one thing, YUM!  Lola on East 4th St., in downtown Cleveland, offers a bistro style menu that is fantastic and a staff that will accommodate you whether you have an hour lunch break or an evening to wile away with friends.  Lolita, in historic Tremont, has a delicious Mediterranean menu of organic meats and seasonal produce with a sexy, laid-back vibe.  Bar Symon, in Avon Lake, boasts an up-scale bar and grill style menu and a great relaxed atmosphere. B Spot Burgers, which opens later this month at the Eton Chagrin Boulevard in Woodmere, will be, to quote Michael “Beer, Burgers and Brats”.  He also admitted there will be salads and a bean burger for his vegetarian fans. I can’t wait to check out the newest bit of LOVE that Michael Symon has planned for us!

All in all, it was another great weekend in Cleveland!  We are one of the few cities fortunate to host a food show on the same level as the Fabulous Food Show.  If you are looking for a great culinary experience, you need to look no further than your own backyard, Cleveland!

February 2006

Every holiday season, we take our staff to a resturant downtown to thank them for their hard work and to unwind.  This past year, we wanted our crew to experience a resturant with a welcoming ambiance, exquisite cuisine and impeccable service.  The choice was simple. It had to be Johnny's Downtown!

The expectations of General Manager, Andy Lowrey and the always charming presence of  Manager and Catering Director, Mary Hartung are conveyed through each member of the staff that you will encounter while visiting Johnny's.  Enjoy the extremely modest and accurate review to follow and, as always, we look forward to visiting with you, downtown!

Johnny's Downtown was launched in 1993 in response to the overwhelming success of Johnny's Bar, it's founding restaurant in the heart of Cleveland.

Entrees are served with only the freshest ingredients to ensure the richest flavor.  Consistency is this restaurant's claim to fame, earning it continuous top 10 rankings for fine cuisine in Zagat's Survey.  A diverse offering of wines have made the grade of excellent attainable every year since 2000 according to the Wine Spectator.

Refined elegance sets the stage for sophisticated, chic dining, offering a panoramic view of the downtown skyline in the midst of the trendy warehouse district.  The cuisine is exceptional Italian with a continental flair.  Johnny's is very much the place to see and be seen.

Several opulent private rooms can accommodate parties of 10 to 80.

October 2005

This review is for those Clevelanders looking to get away and lose themselves for a couple of days in the Napa Valley region!  Joe Sr. and his wife, Jan discovered Terra Restaurant located in a lovely, quaint historical building on Railroad Avenue in St. Helena, California (in the heart of Napa Valley).

The friendly greeting by the restaurant’s manager, maitre d’ and waiter quickly set the mood for a casual relaxing evening as they joined many Napa Valley frequent diners to this special restaurant!  They were offered a number of helpful suggestions from a varied gourmet menu.  The menu is dictated by the seasons featuring blends of local ingredients with the flavors of southern France and northern Italy.

The excellent quality of the food prepared by award-winning chef’s Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani turned out to be a fantastic three-hour gastronomic experience! For more information and advance reservations go to www.terrarestaurant.com.
